The Future of Transit? Dubai’s High-Speed Ropeway Transit System

Dubai is often considered by many to be a true city of innovation. From its architecture to its IT infrastructure, you’d be forgiven for thinking of it as a city of the future!

The newest industry to be completely transformed by this forward-thinking approach is undoubtedly transport. You’ve already heard about the hyperloop , but there’s another cutting-edge method of transportation that’s set to be explored in the city in the decade to follow: the ropeway.

Dubai has been actively exploring the new transit system for a few months now, and we’re set to examine the possibilities in our article today!

WHAT IS A ROPEWAY TRANSIT SYSTEM?

In the simplest possible terms, a ropeway transit system is a network of urban ropeways that connect key areas of the city to one another.

On these ropeways, passenger cabins will move back and forth across the lines at speeds of up to 45 km/hr.

Driverless and completely automatic, the ropeway transit systems are a convenient, accessible and highly energy-efficient transport method for moving passengers across an urban area.

For a city like Dubai, the network is that much more appealing as it will add an additional inter-urban public transit system alongside the existing bus and metro lines to expedite the movement of residents and reduce waits and queues.

FOUR BENEFITS OF DUBAI'S PROPOSED ROPEWAY TRANSIT SYSTEM

While an additional transit network may seem superfluous, there are a few key benefits of the ropeway transit system that offer it tremendous value to Dubai, in particular.

1: IT'S ENERGY EFFICIENT

On top of its comparative value in terms of construction complexity when compared with underground metro lines, ropeway transit systems are an ideal solution for the environment, since they emit no direct air pollution.

For a city that’s always looking to optimise its infrastructure and cut back on emissions, the ropeway transit system seems to be a cutting-edge solution to the challenges of today.

2: THEY ALIGN WITH THE VISIONS OF TOMORROW

Dubai has expressed its desire to go driverless as much as possible, and the proposed ropeway system is a great way to meet RTA goals of having one quarter of its public transport fleet be completely automated.

Moreover, it could be set to completely transform the way people commute to work and move through the various Dubai free zones.

3: THEY HAVE LITTLE-TO-NO IMPACT ON THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT

Public transport can have the unfortunate side-effect of disrupting local communities. However, with the ropeway system, that becomes much less of a concern.

Rather than being forced to dig up sites for a metro station or revamp the streets to accommodate busses, a ropeway system incurs fewer disruptions during construction, and less of a headache upon use due to the simple fact that it is virtually silent during operation.

4: THEY PROVIDE A STUNNING VIEW OF THE CITY

Dubai’s skyline is one of the very best in the world, and tourists come from all over to take in the beautiful skyscrapers.

Sadly, outside of a quick helicopter ride it wasn’t quite possible for tourists to catch more than a fleeting glimpse of the sight.

The ropeway transit system has the distinct advantage of giving its passengers a great opportunity to sit down, relax and take in the full beauty of the city.

The future of Dubai is bright, regardless of industry, but the transport sector is perhaps the one that you’ll want to keep an eye on in the years to come. Between the hyperloop and the proposed ropeway system, the next ten years are going to be pivotal in the continued growth of Dubai.
